once in a blue moon
Once in a blue moon (idiom). Not very often; something rare in occurrence.
The poetic phrase, once in a blue moon, is often used to describe something that rarely happens. This expression stems from the term Blue Moon, which refers to the second full moon that occasionally appears in a single month (and sadly doesn't mean the moon turns blue in colour!).
Each lunation (the period of time from one full moon to the next; a lunar month) takes approximately 29 and a half days. For a Blue Moon to take place, a full moon must occur at the beginning of the month. This generally happens every two or three years, although sometimes an even more unusual event of two blue moons in a year can occur!
