AMETHYST

As one of very few naturally purple crystals, amethyst is a popular and much loved stone, favoured for its colourful beauty. It is a member of the quartz family, and is considered the most highly prized variety of this mineral. The colour purple has long been associated with royalty, and amethyst has historically adorned the richest and most powerful rulers. Ancient Egyptians also wore amethyst in battle to bring them courage and luck.
Amethyst is thought to have strong healing and cleansing powers, enhance higher states of consciousness and spiritual awareness. It calms the mind, brings serenity and aids meditation, earning it the reputation of one of the most spiritual gemstones obtainable.
Amethyst is the birthstone of February, and considered an important crystal for those born under the Pisces star sign (from 19th February to 20th March). It is said to support the dualistic nature of this sign; it assists their creativity and desire to help others, yet curbs their tendency towards escapism and fantasy, by having a sobering effect on overindulgence (its name derives from the Greek amethystos, which means 'not drunken'!).
